A second form of mixed methods design is embedded design where qualitative and quantitative data are collected simultaneously but to have one form of data play a supportive role to the other form of data. the reason for collecting the second form of data is that it will augment or support the primary form of data.
Example: During an experiment, the researcher may collect qualitative data during the trial to examine how participants in the treatment condition are experiencing the intervention. The primary aim of the study, in this case, is to examine the impact of the experimental conditions on the outcome, but the addition of qualitative data enables the researcher to also explore how participants are experiencing the process of the experiment.
